Renewable energies (solar, wind, and waves) have distinct characteristics from fossil fuel energy sources. Electricity production from these sources can be associated with lower direct greenhouse gas emissions during the electricity production phase. However, like other energy technologies, there can also be environmental impacts associated with their life cycle, including the construction, operation, and decommissioning of infrastructure. These impacts can include effects on the landscape, habitats, and ecosystems, which are considered in project development.

The same cannot be said for non-renewable energy sources, where the use of fossil fuels (coal, gas, and oil) releases polluting gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO). The emission of these gases has an environmental impact on the greenhouse effect, contributing to the intensification of global warming and climate change.

What do greenhouse gas emissions consist of?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main gas resulting from emissions (60%), produced when burning fossil fuels, such as coal, gas or oil. CO2 is naturally assimilated by plants and transformed into oxygen in the well-known process of photosynthesis, however the abnormal amount of this gas emitted into the atmosphere today and throughout the 20th century and continuous deforestation makes the natural cycle carbon dioxide is unregulated, causing what is also known as global warming.

Global warming is a phenomenon characterized by climate change and the increase in the planet's average temperature.
The consequences of global warming include melting ice, rising ocean levels, desertification, changes in rainfall patterns, floods and a reduction in biodiversity.
